Nicolas Jarry tops Kecmanovic for first Grand Slam win since 2018

Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry reached the second round of the Australian Open by beating Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, the No 26 seed, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at Melbourne Park on Tuesday night.

Jarry, ranked No 154, will play the winner of the match between American Ben Shelton and Chinese Zhizhen Zhang next.

Tennis Majors

Jarry had not won a main draw Grand Slam match since 2018 – he snapped a six-match losing streak at the majors. The Chilean, a former world No 38, recently served an 11-month doping ban, beginning in 2020. He missed nearly all of the 2020 season and began his climb back up the rankings late in 2020. He has not been inside the top-100 since October of 2019.

He improved to 3-11 lifetime at the Slams with his win.
