Italian Matteo Arnaldi reached the second round of the Australian Open by beating Australian wildcard Adam Walton 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-4 at Melbourne Park on Sunday night.
The 22-year-old Italian was making his debut at Melbourne Park and his fourth in a Grand Slam main draw- he reached the round of 16 at last year’s US Open in his last Grand Slam appearance.
Arnaldi smacked 16 aces and hit 57 winners, against just one ace and 21 winners for the 24-year-old Aussie, who was making his main draw debut.
Arnaldi, ranked No 41, will play the winner of the match between Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 10 seed, and Canadian Milos Raonic next.
