Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the 18th seed, was knocked out of the Australian Open on Thursday by Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets.

The 25-year-old Kecmanovic needed only one hour and 48 minutes to oust the Pole 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on John Cain Arena. The Serb has now won two of the three matches on tour against Hurkacz. He will play either 13th seed Holger Rune or former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the third round.

With the loss, Hurkacz drops to 3-4 for the season, his first with new coaches Ivan Lendl and Nicolas Massu in his team. The Pole, who reached the quarter-finals here in 2024, has now lost in the second round in the last three Grand Slams.

Kecmanovic, a former junior world No 1, is through to the third round at Melbourne Park for the first time in five main draw appearances. It equals his best showing at a Grand Slam – he also reached the third round at the 2019 US Open.
