Australian Open: Hurkacz survives to Sonego in five sets

Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 10 seed, advanced to the third round of the Australian Open by winning against Italian Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.

Hurkacz, ranked No 11, will play Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 20 seed, next.

The Pole beat Spaniard Pedro Martinez (7-6 (1), 6-2, 6-2) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round, Sonego, ranked No 47, won against Portuguese Nuno Borges (7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-1).
