Australian Open: Humbert through to last 16 as Fils retires from all-French encounter

No 14 seed Ugo Humbert moved into the last 16 of the Australian Open when No 20 seed Arthur Fils retired at Melbourne Park.

Humbert, ranked No 14, led 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 1-0 when Fils, ranked No 21, pulled out on Friday night at Melbourne Park.

Ugo Humbert will play German Alexander Zverev, the second seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, Humbert defeated Italian qualifier Matteo Gigante (7-6 (5), 7-5, 6-4) and Lebanese qualifier Hady Habib (6-3, 6-4, 6-4).

Arthur Fils edged out Finn Otto Virtanen (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-4) and Quentin Halys (6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5) earlier in the tournament.
