Australian Open: Gritty Sabalenka beats Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, defeated Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.
While the opening set unfolded in favour of the two-time defending champion as many expected, a defiant Bouzas Maneiro fought back well in the second to go up a break at 5-2.
However, Sabalenka did not panic, regaining her rhythm and winning the final five games of the match to make the third round.
“In the second set, I don’t know, maybe I was rushing too much,” Sabalenka said afterwards.
“After being 5-2 down I was like whatever, I’ll just leave this set. Then somehow, I managed to turn it around.”
Sabalenka, ranked No 1, will face Dane Clara Tauson next.
Ahead of her victory, the Belarusian won against American Sloane Stephens (6-3, 6-2).
Bouzas Maneiro, ranked No 54, won against Sonay Kartal (6-1, 7-6 (5)) in the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season.
