Gauff beats Raducanu in battle of rising stars to reach third round
Coco Gauff won against Emma Raducanu 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday and will play the winner of the match between Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 29 seed, and American Bernarda Pera in the next round
American Coco Gauff, the No 7 seed, defeated Emma Raducanu 6-3, 7-6 (4) to move into the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.
It is her 100th WTA main-draw level win – the youngest player to achieve that landmark since Caroline Wozniacki in 2009.
This was the pair’s first meeting on tour.
Raducanu had turned her ankle last week and had faced a battle to be fit in time for the first Grand Slam of the year – her second main-draw appearance at the Australian Open.
Gauff, ranked No 7, will play the winner of the match between Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 29 seed, and American Bernarda Pera next.
She now has a 32-13 Grand Slam record – the only American women to win more matches at majors before their 20th birthday are Jennifer Capriati (50), Serena Williams (49), Venus Williams (43) and Lindsay Davenport (38).
The 18-year-old American won against Czech Katerina Siniakova (6-1, 6-4) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Raducanu, ranked No 77, beat German Tamara Korpatsch (6-3, 6-2).
