Australian Open: Fritz comes back from a set down to book place in round of 16

American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open by defeating Hungarian Fabian Marozsan 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 at Melbourne Park on Friday.

After a sluggish start, it was a clinical performance from the world No 12. Fritz fired down 19 aces to Marozsan’s seven, winning 79 per cent of first serve points. The American also made a handsome 53 winner to 24 unforced errors, making half as many mistakes than his opponent.

The only concern for Fritz will be his inability to capitalise on break points. Of the 23 break point opportunities that the American had, he could only convert six.

Next up Fritz will face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 7 seed, who raced past Frenchman Luca van Assche for the loss of seven games earlier today.

Ahead of his victory, the American won against Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta (4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4) and French lucky loser Hugo Gaston (6-0, 6-3, 6-1).

Marozsan, ranked No 67, edged out Croat Marin Čilić (6-1, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5) and won against Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 22 seed (7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
