Australian Open: No 2 seed Ruud knocked out

American Jenson Brooksby advanced to the third round of the Australian Open by winning against Norwegian Casper Ruud, the second seed, 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-2 at Melbourne Park on Thursday night.

Brooksby, ranked No 39, will play American Tommy Paul next.

The top two seeds in the men’s singles draws have been knocked out by Americans in the last two days, with Ruud’s loss coming a day after American Mackenzie McDonald took out an injury-addled Rafael Nadal in three sets.

The 22-year-old American defeated Australian Christopher O’Connell (3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round, Ruud, ranked No 3, beat Czech Tomas Machac (6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-3).
