Australian Open: Bencic through to third round

Swiss Belinda Bencic reached the third round of the Australian Open by beating Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens 6-1, 7-6 (3) at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.

Bencic, ranked No 294, will play the winner of the match between No 20 seed Karolina Muchova and Japanese Naomi Osaka next.

Ahead of her victory, the Swiss won against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 16 seed (6-3, 7-6 (6)).

Lamens, ranked No 77, defeated Slovak qualifier Veronika Erjavec (7-5, 7-6 (2)) in the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season.
