Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 4 seed, won against Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to reach the final of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Friday night.
Sinner, ranked No 4, will play the winner of the match between Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, and German Alexander Zverev, the No 6 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the 22-year-old Italian beat Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-4, 7-5, 6-3), Dutch qualifier Jesper De Jong (6-2, 6-2, 6-2), Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 26 seed (6-0, 6-1, 6-3), Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 15 seed (6-4, 7-5, 6-3) and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 5 seed (6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3).
Djokovic, ranked No 1, defeated Croat qualifier Dino Prizmic (6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4), Australian Alexei Popyrin (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3), Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 30 seed (6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (2)), Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 20 seed (6-0, 6-0, 6-3) and American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed (7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the previous rounds.
