Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, beat Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 8 seed, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.

Sinner, ranked No 1, will face American Ben Shelton, the No 21 seed, next.

The Italian won against Chilean Nicolas Jarry (7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-1), Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate (4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3), American Marcos Giron (6-3, 6-4, 6-2) and Dane Holger Rune, the No 13 seed (6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.

In the previous rounds of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025, De Minaur, ranked No 8, won against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-1, 7-5, 6-4), American qualifier Tristan Boyer (6-2, 6-4, 6-3), Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 31 seed (5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-3) and American Alex Michelsen (6-0, 7-6 (5), 6-3).
