Hangzhou Open: Kukushkin through to first ATP quarter-final since 2020
The Kazakh will face the winner of the match between Chinese wildcard Yunchaokete Bu and Russian Karen Khachanov, the second seed, in the next round
Mikhail Kukushkin reached the quarter-finals of the Hangzhou Open by winning against Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the Hengqin International Tennis Center on Friday.
Kukushkin, ranked No 112 and a former top 40 player, will face the winner of the match between Chinese wildcard Yunchaokete Bu and Russian Karen Khachanov, the second seed, next.
In the previous round of the tournament, Kukushkin defeated Italian Luciano Darderi, the No 5 seed (6-3, 6-4).
This is the 36-year-old Kazakh’s first ATP Tour-level quarter-final in almost four years (October 2020) and prior to this week, he had not won a main draw match on the ATP Tour in 2024. It also marks his 20th career ATP Tour-level quarter-final(17th on hardcourts).
Shevchenko, ranked No 58, beat Argentinian qualifier Marco Trungelliti (6-1, 6-1) earlier in the week.
