World No 77 Kamil Majchrzak in shock as he reveals failed drug test
Kamil Majchrzak is the third player in recent months to test positive for a banned substance after Simona Halep and Fernando Verdasco
Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, ranked No 77 in the world, has revealed he failed a drugs test, describing it as the biggest shock but affirming that he had never knowingly taken any banned substance.
The 26-year-old confirmed in a social media post that he tested positive during anti-doping controls during October and November.
“I have some incredibly sad and difficult news to share with everyone. I have tested positive in anti-doping controls during October and November 2022,” Majchrzak said in his post. “Firstly, I have never, ever, knowingly taken any banned substance. At this moment I have no idea what has happened and this is the biggest shock. I have started the most difficult fight of my life – the fight to prove my innocence and to return to the sport I love.”
Majchrzak is named as part of Poland’s United Cup team
Majchrzak, who is part of Poland’s team for the United Cup competition which kicks off in Australia later this month, peaked at No 75 in the world rankings. He reached the semi-finals of the ATP Pune Open earlier this year as well as quarter-finals of the ATP events in Geneva and Sofia.
It now looks unlikely he will be able to play at the United Cup though a formal statement from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the body that deals with suspected doping violations tennis, is yet to be made. Majchrzak, a former junior top 10 player, is the third player to test positive for a banned substance in recent months after fellow ATP pro Fernando Verdasco, who failed to extend a TUE for his ADHD medication, and WTA player Simona Halep.
