“Withdrawing from and missing the Rome event is so so difficult” – Berrettini out of Italian Open
The former Wimbledon finalist has not played since pulling out of the Monte-Carlo round of 16 match against Holger Rune
Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini has pulled out of the Rome Masters which begins on May 10. Berrettini suffered a grade 2 tear to his internal oblique muscle at the Monte-Carlo Masters and pulled out of his round of 16 match against Holger Rune.
He also pulled out of this week’s Madrid Masters as a result of the same injury. With a 7-6 record on the tour, Berrettini has dropped to No 21 in the rankings.
In a post on Instagram, the 27-year-old said he will not be able to train for another week and that missing out on his home event was particularly difficult.
“I have been holding on to the hope of being able to compete in Rome, a tournament that means so much to me and where all my dreams started. However, my latest scan results show I still need at least a week before I can start training physically again,” he said in the post. “Withdrawing from and missing the Rome event is so so difficult, and that is all because of the (Italian) fans. Your support means everything and I can’t wait to be back competing in front of you again soon.”
The Italian, who also missed Rome last year, has a 7-5 career record at the Italian Open, with his best finish coming in 2020 when he reached the quarter-finals
