Thiem saves two match points to reach Winston-Salem second round
Dominic Thiem edged out J.J. Wolf 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (6) to set up a second round clash against top seed Grigor Dimitrov
Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem moved into the second round of the Winston-Salem Open by edging out American J..J. Wolf in a three-set thriller that was interrupted by rain at Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Monday night.
Thiem saved two match points against Wolf, who also entered via a wild card, before prevailing 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (6).
The match, which had a rain delay of more than one hour and 50 minutes, finally got completed after 3 hours and 10 minutes of play.
The former US Open champion will next meet top seed Grigor Dimitrov in the second round. The Bulgarian received a bye in his opening round.
Thiem, now ranked No 231 in the world, was playing his first hard court match of the season and this marked his first hardcourt win in 18 months. The Austrian also has a wild card entry into the US Open next week.
