American lucky loser Zachary Svajda defeated Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 3 seed, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the Winston-Salem Open at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Tuesday evening.

Svajda, ranked No 107, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Alexandre Muller and Russian Pavel Kotov, the No 15 seed, next.

The 21-year-old American won against Serb Laslo Djere (6-4, 6-1) in the previous round of the Winston-Salem tournament.
