Winston-Salem Open: Sonego wins the tournament
Lorenzo Sonego won the title on Saturday night against Alex Michelsen
Italian Lorenzo Sonego, the No 10 seed, won the Winston-Salem Open title by defeating American Alex Michelsen, the No 11 seed, 6-0, 6-3 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Saturday night.
It’s his fourth career title, the first since 2022. Lorenzo Sonego is going to be world No 48 on Monday, just before the start of the US Open in New York.
In the previous rounds of the Winston-Salem tournament, Sonego, ranked No 58, beat Swiss Dominic Stricker (6-4, 6-1), Chinese Juncheng Shang (W/O), Russian Pavel Kotov, the No 15 seed (6-3, 7-5) and Belgian David Goffin (6-3, 6-2).
Michelsen, ranked No 52, beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (7-6 (3), 6-4), Belgian Zizou Bergs (6-1, 6-2), wildcard Christopher Eubanks (7-5, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5)) and Spanish wildcard Pablo Carreno Busta (7-6 (5), 2-1 ret.) earlier in the tournament.
