American wildcard Alex Michelsen reached the second round of the Winston-Salem Open by beating Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-0 at Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Michelsen, ranked No 138, will face No 15 seed Sebastian Ofner next.
