Winston-Salem Open: Michelsen beats Eubanks in third set tiebreak to reach semi-finals
The 11th seeded American will meet qualifier Learner Tien or wildcard Pablo Carreno Busta for a place in the final
No 11 seed Alex Michelsen edged out wildcard Chris Eubanks 7-5, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) to move into the semi-finals of the Winston-Salem Open at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Thursday.
This is the third ATP Tour semi-final for the young American with both his previous ones coming in Newport on grass (2022, 2023). It was also his first win in a deciding set tiebreak in 2024 (0-3 prior to this) while Eubanks was 3-0 in deciding set tiebreaks before this match.
Michelsen, ranked No 52, will face the winner of the match between American qualifier Learner Tien and Spanish wildcard Pablo Carreno Busta next.
Michelsen beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (7-6 (3), 6-4) and Belgian Zizou Bergs (6-1, 6-2) ahead of his win today.
Earlier in the tournament, Eubanks, ranked No 120, won against Australian Adam Walton (2-6, 7-5, 6-4), Frenchman Hugo Gaston, the No 14 seed (6-1, 6-4) and Russian Roman Safiullin, the No 17 seed (6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (8)).
