American Steve Johnson moved into the last 16 of the Winston-Salem Open by winning against Spaniard Pedro Martinez, the No 12 seed, 7-6 (2), 6-2 at Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Tuesday night.
Johnson, ranked No 115, will play Frenchman Richard Gasquet next.
The American beat qualifier Emilio Nava (6-3, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
