Jack Draper ousts Fabio Fognini to set round of 16 clash with Thiem at Winston-Salem

The eye-opening season of 20-year-old British hopeful Jack Draper continues to improve.

The No 13 seed won against Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 on Tuesday evening to move into the last 16 of the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Tuesday night.

Draper, ranked No 55 and tabbed by many as a future top-50 talent, will play Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem next.

Now 12-7 on the season, Draper entered 2022 with a 2-3 record at the ATP level. He has been particularly strong this summer, reaching a semi-final at Eastbourne and, more recently, his first Masters 1000 quarter-final at the National Bank Open in Montreal.

In the previous round of the Winston-Salem, Fognini, ranked No 61, defeated Serb Dusan Lajovic (7-5, 7-5). The 36-year-old Italian, ranked 61, drops to 16-18 on the season.
