Wawrinka confirms he will be back in 2025
The 39-year-old Swiss veteran lost in the second round of this week’s Swiss Indoors in Basel
2024 has been the year of retirements with the likes of Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem, Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza all hanging up their rackets.
But at least one tennis veteran will be back in 2025. Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka, aged 39, confirmed that he will continue to compete on the circuit in 2025.
The three-time Grand Slam champion is currently ranked No 169 in the world and was in action in Basel this week, where he lost a close straight sets second round clash against American Ben Shelton.
As per Swiss journalist Simon Graf, Wawrinka confirmed in Basel that he will return for another season.
The former world No 3 began the 2024 season inside the world’s top 50 but dropped as low as No 236 last month. With his semi-final finish in Stockholm last week and his second round result in Basel, he should move to around the 150 mark in next week’s world rankings.
