Los Cabos Open: Koepfer survives seesaw second set against Kovacevic, makes semi-finals
Dominik Koepfer defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 7-5 on Friday night. He’ll face the winner of the match between Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 5 seed, and American Tommy Paul, the No 3 seed, in the next round
German Dominik Koepfer, the No 7 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Los Cabos Open by beating American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 7-5 at the Cabo del Mar Sports Center on Friday night.
Though the score line may seem relatively straight forward for the world No 84, the second set was quite eventful for both players. The set began uneventfully, with Koepfer and Kovacevic each holding serve three times. At 3-3, however, a switch flicked, beginning five consecutive breaks of serve.
It was Koepfer who managed to right the ship when needed though, holding serve at 6-5 and closing out the tumultuous set to book his spot in the semi-finals of the Los Cabos Open this weekend. The win sees Koepfer continue a rich vein of form the past fortnight, with the German defeating former champion John Isner and world No 30 Dan Evans at the Atlanta Open last week.
Koepfer, ranked No 84, will play the winner of the match between Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 5 seed, and American Tommy Paul, the No 3 seed, next.
The German won against Chilean Tomas Barrios Vera (6-4, 6-3) and Australian James Duckworth (6-2, 6-2) earlier in the tournament. In the previous rounds of the Los Cabos tournament, Kovacevic, ranked No 129, defeated qualifier Omni Kumar (6-2, 7-5) and edged out second seed Cameron Norrie (5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-4).
