Citi Open: Shevchenko’s run ended by Evans in straight sets
Daniel Evans won against Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 6-3 on Friday evening. He’ll face the winner of the match between Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang and American Frances Tiafoe, the second seed, in the next round
Daniel Evans advanced to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open by beating Russian Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 6-3 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Friday evening.
In the previous rounds of the Washington D.C. tournament, Shevchenko, ranked No 93, had been a giant-killer, winning against American Maxime Cressy (6-3, 7-6 (8)) and edging out American Sebastian Korda, the No 8 seed (5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4).
No 9 seed Dan Evans was a bridge too far for the 22-year-old however, who had no answer to Evans’ error-free tennis and 27 winners. Evans, ranked No 30, will face the winner of the match between Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang and American Frances Tiafoe, the second seed, next.
Daniel Evans won against Frenchman Gregoire Barrere (2-6, 6-0, 6-3) in the previous round of the Washington D.C. tournament.
