Vienna Open: Tiafoe through to second round as Evans withdraws with calf injury
Frances Tiafoe moves into round two as Evans was forced to retire injured. He’ll play the winner of the match between Monfils and Altmaier in the next round
American Frances Tiafoe, the No 7 seed, reached the second round of the Vienna Open when Daniel Evans was forced to retire injured at the Wiener Stadthalle after just five games.
Evans was in control of the match at 4-1 up before he felt a pain in his right calf muscle. The injury was severe enough for the Brit to call time on the match, ending his Vienna Open campaign only five games after it has started.
The injury will worry Great Britain’s Davis Cup captain Leon Smith, who had recently named Evans in his final squad to face Serbia in their Davis Cup Finals clash next month.
Tiafoe, meanwhile, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Gael Monfils and German Daniel Altmaier next.
