Vienna Open: Rublev through to semi-finals, dents Zverev’s hopes of Turin qualification
Andrey Rublev won against Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 on Friday evening. He’ll face the winner of the match between American Frances Tiafoe, the No 7 seed, and Italian Jannik Sinner, the second seed, in the next round
Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 3 seed, won against German Alexander Zverev, the No 5 seed, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 to move into the semi-finals of the Vienna Open at the Wiener Stadthalle on Friday evening.
Rublev, ranked No 5, will play the winner of the match between American Frances Tiafoe, the No 7 seed, and Italian Jannik Sinner, the second seed, next. The defeat dents Zverev’s hopes of securing qualification for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
Earlier in the tournament, the Russian defeated Australian Alexei Popyrin (7-6 (5), 6-4) and Italian Matteo Arnaldi (7-5, 6-3).
Zverev, ranked No 10, beat Austrian wildcard Sebastian Ofner (6-4, 6-1) and Cameron Norrie (6-2, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Vienna tournament.
