Defending champion Medvedev battles into semi-finals in Vienna
The Russian has now won a record-equalling 63 matches in 2023
Defending champion Daniil Medvedev moved into the semi-finals of the Vienna Open by defeating No 8 seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at the Wiener Stadthalle on Friday afternoon.
Medvedev, ranked No 3, will play the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, and Croat wildcard Borna Gojo next. Medvedev is trying to successfully defend a title for the first time in his career and he’s now won 63 matches this year, equalling his previous best, set in 2021.
“I hope I can get one more, you never know,” Medvedev said. “Tennis is a strong sport and we have strong opponents. So hopefully I can get one more win at least or maybe more. I have had an amazing season… But it’s not finished yet, so I want to try to finish it even stronger.”
Ahead of his victory, Medvedev won against Frenchman Arthur Fils (6-4, 6-2) and edged out Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (3-6, 6-2, 6-4).
Khachanov, ranked No 16, beat Roman Safiullin (6-4, 6-4) and Jiri Lehecka (6-3, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
