Vienna Open: Gojo upsets Paul to reach quarter-finals
The Croatian wildcard face the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, and qualifier Tomas Machac in the next round
Croatian wildcard Borna Gojo upset American Tommy Paul, the No 6 seed, in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) to reach the last eight of the Vienna Open at the Wiener Stadthalle on Thursday.
Gojo, ranked No 77, will face the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, and qualifier Tomas Machac next.
Ahead of his win today, the Croat defeated Russian Aslan Karatsev (6-3, 6-3).
Paul, ranked No 12, won against French qualifier Alexandre Muller (6-3, 6-1) in the previous round of the Vienna tournament. The win is a setback for Paul’s chances to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
