Vienna Open: Berrettini overcomes Tiafoe to reach quarter-finals

The former Wimbledon runner-up will play the winner of the match between Russian Karen Khachanov and American Brandon Nakashima next

Italian Matteo Berrettini moved into the last eight of the Vienna Open by winning against American Frances Tiafoe, the No 5 seed, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 at the Wiener Stadthalle on Wednesday.

Berrettini had three matchpoints in the second set, at 5-4 and in the tiebreak but was able to convert only on his fifth matchpoint in the decider.

Berrettini, ranked No 41, will face the winner of the match between Russian Karen Khachanov and American Brandon Nakashima next.

The Italian beat Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics (7-5, 6-4) ahead of his win today.

In the previous round of the tournament, Tiafoe, ranked No 15, defeated Cameron Norrie (6-4, 7-6 (4)).
