Vienna Open: De Minaur comes from behind against Mensik to reach last four
The Australian will face Russian Karen Khachanov next
Australian Alex de Minaur, the second seed, edged out qualifier Jakub Mensik 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 to move into the semi-finals of the Vienna Open at the Wiener Stadthalle on Friday.
De Minaur and Mensik battled hard for two hours, 37 minutes, with the latter recording staggering 15 aces and 48 winners against the eventual winner’s three and 17. The Czech, however, failed to convert any of the four break points he created.
The Aussie, on the other hand, cashed in on two break-point opportunities, also being helped by Mensik’s 66 unforced errors.
De Minaur, ranked No 10, will face Russian Karen Khachanov next.
The Australian won against German Jan-Lennard Struff (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Italian Flavio Cobolli (7-6 (2), 3-1 ret.) in the previous rounds of the Vienna tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Mensik, ranked No 51, defeated Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 8 seed (7-6 (3), 6-2) and Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (6-3, 7-6 (7)).
