France’s Luca Van Assche kicked off his 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals campaign on a winning note with a four-set win over fourth seed Shang Juncheng in Jeddah.
The Frenchman, who reached the semi-finals at this event in his debut appearance last year, won 4-3(3), 2-4, 4-1, 4-3(5) in one hour and 56 minutes in the first match of the event.
The win takes him to 1-0 in Red Group while Juncheng stands at 0-1. Second seed Alex Michelsen and seventh seed Nishesh Basavareddy are also in the Red Group and play later on Wednesday.
Despite the loss, Shang still remains in contention for a semi-final berth, depending on how the rest of the matches this week play out.
