German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann won against Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the US Clay Court Championships at River Oaks Country Club in Houston on Tuesday.
Hanfmann, ranked No 134, will play second seed Tommy Paul next.
