United Cup: Gauff/Fritz win mixed doubles to give United States win over Canada
Coco Gauff and Felix Auger-Aliassime won their singles matches to level the tie at 1-1 earlier
Former US Open champion Coco Gauff doubled up on Sunday – winning her singles match and then teaming up with Taylor Fritz to win the mixed doubles as the United States beat Canada 2-1 at the United Cup.
Gauff, who ended the 2024 season by winning the WTA Finals in Riyadh, defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 36 minutes in the first singles rubber of the contest in Perth. This was the first meeting on tour between the two players.
In the second singles, Taylor Fritz, who reached the final of the US Open in September, took a solid start against Felix Auger-Aliassime, leading by a set and a break for the Canadian bounced back to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to send the tie into the mixed doubles.
In a match that ended at 12:54 AM local time, Gauff and Fritz came through 7-6(2), 7-5 over Auger-Aliassime and Fernandez to give the Americans the win.
“Really happy with how we played today in the mixed,” Gauff said as quoted by the United Cup website. “I felt we got better the longer the match went. We had a lot of chances and finally we were able to stick ’em when it mattered.”
“After the way I lost my singles match it would have been really tough to go home today with a mixed doubles loss today as well,” Fritz said. “Thank you Coco for carrying the team and we got it done.”
This is the first tie of the 2025 United Cup for the American team while Canada had defeated Croatia in their opening tie.
