United Cup: Fritz carries United States to victory over Britain after Boulter stuns Pegula
Canada clinch a 2-1 win over Chile after a dramatic mixed doubles win
American Taylor Fritz won his singles and mixed doubles match at the United Cup on Sunday to give the defending champions United States a 2-1 win over Great Britain.
The Brits got off to a flying start with Katie Boulter scoring her first top 5 win to beat Jessica Pegula 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 44 minutes in Group C action.
It was then down to Fritz to keep the Americans alive in the tie, which he did with a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Cameron Norrie. It was Fritz’s eighth win over Norrie in 14 career meetings on the ATP Tour.
In the deciding mixed doubles rubber. Fritz and Pegula scored a tight 1-6, 7-6, 10-7 win over Boulter and Neal Skupski. With this Britain are now 1-1 in the event, having beaten Australia earlier.
Leylah Fernandez stars in Canada’s 2-1 win over Chile
Also on Sunday, Canada clinched a 2-1 victory over Chile, but only just after Steven Diez and Leylah Fernandez won a dramatic mixed doubles contest.
In the first rubber of the tie, former US Open runner-up Fernandez scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chile’s Daniela Seguel. Canadian hopes suffered a blow after Felix Auger-Aliassime announced he would not be playing the tie due to a knee injury.
That led Diez, ranked No 314 in the world, to step in against Nicholas Jarry. The Chilean won 7-5, 6-4 to send the tie into the deciding mixed doubles.
It was there that Fernandez and Diez fought from 8-6 down in the match tiebreak to beat Tomas Barrios Vera and Daniela Seguel 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 and win the tie.
