Zverev leads Germany into United Cup semi-finals
The Germans will face Australia for a place in the final, while Poland meet France in the other semi-final
Alexander Zverev led Germany into the semi-finals of the United Cup on Friday after he recorded singles and doubles wins in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Greece.
Maria Sakkari thumped Angelique Kerber 6-0, 6-3 to put Greece ahead but world No 7 Zverev beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4 to level, before he and Laura Siegemund saw off Sakkari and Petros Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-3 in the mixed doubles to win it for Germany.
Zverev took his tally for the week to five wins out of six and Germany will now play hosts Australia in the semi-finals on Saturday. Poland take on France in the other semi-final.
“I had to come out aggressive because I knew Stefanos is one of the best aggressive players, if not the best aggressive player, in the game,” Zverev said, quoted on the United Cup website. “If he is on the front foot it’s extremely difficult to play against him and that’s why I don’t have a great record against him.”
