Tsitsipas praises Alcaraz: “It’s fair to say that we see you as an example”
The Greek was in generous mood despite losing to the Spaniard for the fourth time in four meetings
Stefanos Tsitsipas said the tennis world sees Carlos Alcaraz as an example, after he found the Spaniard too hot to handle in the final of the Barcelona Open on Sunday.
The Greek was outplayed 6-3, 6-4 by the brilliant 19-year-old, who has now won all four of their meetings.
The pair had what Alcaraz called a “spiky” meeting when they played in Barcelona last year but this time the Greek was full of praise and generosity toward the world No 2.
“I had the opportunity to see you a few years ago for the very first time when you first got introduced on the ATP Tour and I saw you play a little bit,” Tsitsipas said.
“Some of us guys that were here a little bit earlier than you, I think most of us were fascinated by your tennis. I would like to congratulate you on this amazing build that you’ve been putting in the last few years. It’s very impressive.
“I think it’s fair enough to say that we see you as an example. Even though we’re slightly older than you, we see your achievements as something that will hopefully push us to do better.”
