Tsitsipas locks fourth spot at season-ending ATP Finals
Tsitsipas joins Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud in the eight-player field in Turin
Stefanos Tsitsipas became the fourth player to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin on Friday.
Tsitsipas, the winner in 2019, joins Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud in the eight-player field. This will mark the Greek’s fourth consecutive appearance at the ATP Finals, which will be held from November 13-20.
Tsitsipas has won 49 matches in 2022, the second-best on Tour behind Alcaraz’s 52 wins. The world No 6 picked up titles in Monte-Carlo and Mallorca and was a finalist at Rome, Cincinnati and Rotterdam. He also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Madrid and Acapulco.
Medvedev in fifth position, Djokovic 15th in Race to ATP Finals
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic are among those chasing the remaining four berths in Turin. Medvedev is in fifth position with 3,375 points followed by countryman Andrey Rublev (No 6) with 3,055 points and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime (No 7) with 2,860 points.
Defending champion Alexander Zverev, who has not played since his horrific ankle injury at the French Open, is at No 8 in the Race to Turin with 2,700 points. The German pulled out of the Vienna Open in the last week of October where he is the defending champion, and his fitness remains a concern heading into the last quarter of the season.
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz (2,635 points) and American Taylor Fritz (2,385) round up the top 10 in the Race to Turin.
Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is currently in 15th position with 2,015 points. With a Grand Slam title this year under his belt, Djokovic needs to ensure he remains within the top 20 in the Race to Turin to secure his berth in the season-ending ATP Finals.
