Top seed Zverev upset by Griekspoor in second round in Indian Wells

Top seed Alexander Zverev suffered another early defeat as he was beaten 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) by Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the second round of the Indian Wells Masters on Friday.

Zverev, who has not gone past the quarter-finals in four events now since reaching the Australian Open final in January, saved five match points when Griekspoor served for the match at 6-5 in the third but could not find a way in the tiebreak after three hours, six minutes.

It was the Dutchman’s first win over Zverev in their past six battles, having lost all four in 2024 including their clash at Roland-Garros, when he squandered a 4-1 lead in the decider.

First top-5 win for Griekspoor

It looked as if Griekspoor had blown it when he failed to take any of his five match points when serving for the match in the third.

But he bounced back bravely in the tiebreak, leading 2-0 and holding his nerve, clinching victory on his sixth match point, before falling to his knees in relief.

Griekspoor, ranked No 43, will face Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the No 29 seed, next.

The Dutchman won against Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
