Tiafoe untouchable in Vienna, beats Schwartzman to move into semi-finals
Another top 10 conquest for the American as he moves into the final four
He had already taken out the top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas – and less than 24 hours later, Frances Tiafoe has now knocked out Diego Schwartzman to reach the semi-finals of the Erste Bank Open.
The American beat the sixth seed 6-4, 7-6(6) to get his first-ever win over the Argentinian – and both their previous meetings had been this year, requiring three sets to conclude. Tiafoe wrapped this one up in straight sets to reach the biggest semi-final of his career thus far.
He had to work hard to take the second set. Although he raced to a 5-1 lead, Schwartzman hit back to win five games on the bounce, and it was left to Tiafoe to force a tiebreak. Again, the American moved ahead quickly before Schwartzman responded – but Tiafoe finally got the job done.
He will play either Jannik Sinner or Casper Ruud for a spot in the final.
