The quotes of 2022, episode 1 – Tsitsipas answers Zverev: “We’ll see who deserves to be in the top 3”
To end 2022, Tennis Majors offers you a series highlighting the outstanding, inspiring or funny quotes of the year. First episode, Stefanos Tsitsipas’ answer to Alexander Zverev’s predictions…
Question, at the ATP Cup press conference on January 3: What do you think of Zverev’s statement that the new top 3 would be Djokovic, Medvedev and himself?
Tsitsipas’s response?
“Let tennis do the talking. We have a long year ahead of us. Let us all play our best tennis, and let’s see who is the one that deserves it at the end of the year.”
A few days earlier, at the end of 2021, Alexander Zverev, whose self-confidence and ambition have regularly crossed the rubicon of pretention in the eyes of his critics, had given this analysis for Eurosport Germany: “I think 2022 could be very similar to the last six months of 2021. All the big tournaments of the year, the Majors, the Tokyo Games, the Masters, were won by Medvedev, Djokovic and me. And I don’t expect it to be any different next year.”
Torn ligaments in his right ankle at the French Open when he was ranked No 3 in the world and mathematically in contention to become No 1 in the short term, the German, who was absent for the rest of the year, eventually finished 12th. Tsitsipas? Just off the podium – behind Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud.
