“The Australian Open is my main goal for 2025” – Alcaraz

The world No 3 from Spain has never advanced beyond the quarter-finals at the Australian Open.

At only 21 years old, Carlos Alcaraz could become the youngest player in history to achieve the career Grand Slam next month. A record that currently belongs to his compatriot Rafael Nadal, who achieved this feat at the age of 24.

Alcaraz has already won at Roland-Garros (2024), Wimbledon (2023 and 2024) and the US Open (2022). The world No 3 is now only missing a title at the Australian Open to complete his list of achievements. In Melbourne, the Spaniard has never done better than a quarter-final last year, where he lost to Alexander Zverev.

On Friday, Alcaraz announced his ambition to win the Australian Open, after receiving the award for the best sportsman in the region from the Autonomous Community thanks to the votes of the journalists who make up the Sports Press Association of the Region of Murcia.

“I’m a very ambitious person and I want to win the Australian Open to complete my Grand Slam record. I want 2025 to be an even more exciting year. Let’s just say I want more. Australia is what I want to get tattooed, even though my dad doesn’t like it very much. To be champion there is my main goal for next season,” the Spaniard said as per Marca.

This year has been marked by ups and downs

With a ranking of No 3, the Spaniard could find world No 1 Jannik Sinner and 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in his part of the draw at the Australian Open. Alcaraz has started his pre-season work alongside his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero. He will not participate in any official tournament before the first Grand Slam of the season in 2025 and will be able to spend the end of the year with his family to recharge the batteries.

“This year has been marked by ups and downs, but it has remained positive. I’m still emotional when I watch the videos of Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. I’m starting a hard month of training but being at home for Christmas and New Year’s Eve is wonderful and gives me a break.”
