Taylor Fritz & Jannik Sinner: Comparing the Two Young Tennis Stars
These two young stars are steadily making their way up the rankings. Let’s learn a little bit more about them and their games.
If the names Fritz and Sinner ring bells in the back of your mind, it’s because, at the time of writing, they’ve just secured their places in the Miami Open quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively. Though that combination of names sounds like it might be the title for some new detective movie, it is, in fact, a reference to two of the brightest young tennis stars on the planet.
Those names will be household ones before long, and people are constantly comparing the two players whose rise to fame and glory have been equally meteoric. Even before they stunned the Hard Rock Stadium this past Saturday, tennis fans all over the world had realized that these two young men meant business. If you’re hitting your favorite online sportsbook to make a wager on any upcoming matches, these are definitely two players you should be betting on! Out of 10 players who took part in this round of the tournament, the American Taylor Fritz was one to watch, taking down Dane Holger Rune 6-3, 6-4. Likewise, the cool Italian Jannik Sinner made his own way to the last four without dropping a single set and didn’t lose his composure during his match against Russian Andrey Rublev even once. It’s hardly surprising that many tennis fans are already drawing comparisons between the two players, so we thought we’d take a closer look at what makes them so special and how their statistics match up to each other.
Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz has always had tennis in his blood. Son of Kathy May and Guy Fritz (once ranked number 10 and number 301 in the world, respectively) it hardly comes as a surprise that Taylor wanted to pick up a ball and racket when he was young. Though his mother reports that tennis was actually not his favorite sport when he was younger, it’s clear that his focus has shifted somewhat of late. The 25-year-old tennis star recently claimed yet another title, this time in Delray Beach, beating Miomir Kecmanovic in the final. He has so far claimed five ATP titles in his short and glowing career. Being ranked as number five in the world ATP rankings at the tender age of 25 is certainly a momentous achievement; the fact that he is the first American since Andy Roddick to claim such an honor is just icing on the cake. The young Californian was recently quoted as saying that he believes if he could win a Masters 1000, then a Grand Slam might not be far behind. He is simply biding his time, waiting for things to come together and playing as well as he can in every match.
Not only is Fritz making his mark in the tennis world and making a bundle from it, but he is also making his mark in the entertainment and eSports world. He is one of the stars of the Netflix series Break Point, which focuses on several young tennis stars as they compete for Grand Slam titles. He has been noted as a partner of ReTKGlobal and has tested his gaming skills against some of the best in the world.
Jannik Sinner
Though his name may not give it away at first glance, Jannik Sinner is as Italian as they come. He has been making history his entire career, starting when he became the youngest Italian in tennis history to win a Challenger title. The following year, he found himself ranked as number 46 in the ATP. It hasn’t all been sunshine and roses, though; like any other player, he has had to deal with some ups and downs. Last year in the Rolex Paris Masters tournament, Sinner found himself unceremoniously dumped from the tournament after a first-round defeat by Marc-Andrea Huesler. Sinner is no stranger to these bumps in the road, having played tennis since the tender age of seven, He began training professionally at 13 and flew the nest to begin building a career for himself; not a thing many 13-year-olds can claim to have chosen to do.
Though it’s his love of and prowess in tennis that the world knows him for, he is a big sports lover in general and likes playing soccer whenever he can. He loves AC Milan and supports them whenever he gets the chance.
Hailing from the Sud-Tirol area, he was also a champion skier in Italy at under-12 level.
