Gstaad: Qualifier Halys upsets fifth seed Struff to reach first ATP Tour-level final
The world No 192 will face the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, and Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 6 seed, in the final
French qualifier Quentin Halys moved into the biggest final of his career with an upset win over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, the No 5 seed, at the Swiss Open on Saturday.
Halys, ranked No 192 in the world, defeated Struff 6-3, 7-6 (2) at the Roy Emerson Arena in Gstaad to reach his first final on the ATP Tour.
The Frenchman will play the winner of the second semi-final between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, and Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 6 seed, next.
Halys, a former world No 61, is projected to move back into the world’s top 130 by reaching the final. If he wins the title on Sunday, he will move inside the world’s top 110 ranked players.
Halys beat Richard Gasquet (7-6 (4), 7-6 (5)), Slovak Lukas Klein (6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4) and Brazilian qualifier Gustavo Heide (6-1, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Gstaad tournament.
Earlier in the week, Struff, ranked No 37, defeated Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas (7-6 (6), 7-6 (4)), Swiss wildcard Leandro Riedi (7-6 (6), 7-6 (1)) and Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 4 seed (7-5, 3-6, 6-3).
