Berrettini cruises past Halys to win Swiss Open title
The Italian beat Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-1 to lift his second title of the season in Gstaad
Matteo Berrettini made quick work of qualifier Quentin Halys, beating the Frenchman 6-3, 6-1 in just 59 minutes to win the Swiss Open title.
It is the Italian’s second title of the season, having also won the Marrakech Open in April – another ATP 250 also played on clay.
A former Wimbledon finalist in 2021, Berrettini was outside the top 150 in the ATP rankings back in March after a very difficult period punctuated by injury over the past twelve months.
But he will return to the top 50 for the first time in nearly a year when the new rankings are released on Monday.
Berrettini took the first set courtesy of an early break. After a rain delay halted proceedings at 5-3, the Italian then won seven of the last eight games to power to his second title of the season.
“It feels unbelievable. It feels like it was yesterday that I won my first title here six years ago, but a lot of matches and a lot of things happened,” Berrettini said in his post-match interview.
“I’m just so glad that I can keep playing and enjoying, and I think I found the energy of six years ago during this week. This place is special for me. I’m just so happy.”
In the previous rounds of the Gstaad tournament, Berrettini, ranked No 82, beat Argentinian Pedro Cachin (6-4, 7-6 (2)), Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan (6-4, 6-2), Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 3 seed (7-6 (7), 7-6 (2)) and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed (7-6 (6), 7-5).
Halys, ranked No 192, beat Richard Gasquet (7-6 (4), 7-6 (5)), Slovak Lukas Klein (6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4), Brazilian qualifier Gustavo Heide (6-1, 7-5) and German Jan-Lennard Struff, the No 5 seed (6-3, 7-6 (2)) earlier in the tournament.
