Swiss Open: Berrettini upsets Tsitsipas to reach final
The Italian will face French qualifier Quentin Halys for the title
Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 6 seed, upset Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, 7-6 (6), 7-5 to advance to the final of the Swiss Open at the Roy Emerson Arena in Gstaad on Saturday.
Berrettini, a former world No 6 now ranked No 82, will play French qualifier Quentin Halys for the title on Sunday. It is the third time in his career that the Italian is through to the final in Gstaad. He won the title in 2018 and finished runner-up in 2022.
It also marked Berrettini’s first win over the Greek player in four career meetings on the ATP Tour (five if you include US Open qualifying in 2017).
Ahead of his win today, the Italian won against Argentinian Pedro Cachin (6-4, 7-6 (2)), Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan (6-4, 6-2) and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 3 seed (7-6 (7), 7-6 (2)).
Tsitsipas, ranked No 12, defeated Serb Hamad Medjedovic (7-6 (6), 6-3) and Italian Fabio Fognini, the No 7 seed (6-4, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
