Berrettini edges past Auger-Aliassime to book spot in last four of Swiss Open
Matteo Berrettini beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2) on Friday evening. He’ll play Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, in the next round
Matteo Berrettini, the No 6 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Swiss Open by beating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 3 seed, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2) at the Roy Emerson Arena.
It was a serve-dominated affair, throughout which there were no breaks for either player and only seven break point opportunities earned in total.
The Italian looked impenetrable for much of the match, but Auger-Aliassime did well to hold his own serve so effectively, knowing any slip-up could surrender the set to his opponent.
Unfortunately for the Canadian, even that was not enough. Berrettini inched a very close first-set tiebreak before also taking the second, this time 7-2, to win a very close encounter on two breakers.
Berrettini, ranked No 82, will play Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, next.
The Italian won against Argentinian Pedro Cachin (6-4, 7-6 (2)) and Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan (6-4, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Gstaad tournament, Auger-Aliassime, ranked No 18, won against German Yannick Hanfmann (7-6 (6), 6-2).
