Swiss Indoors: Shelton advances to semi-finals, knocks out top seed Rublev

American Ben Shelton, the No 6 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors by edging out Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4 at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel on Friday.

Shelton, ranked No 23, will face Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 7 seed, next.

He is the first man to beat the top seed in Basel before the semi-final stage since Mischa Zverev defeated Stan Wawrinka in the 2016 quarter-final.

The 22-year-old American beat Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (6-3, 6-4) and Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka (7-6 (2), 7-5) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the Basel tournament, Rublev, ranked No 7, won against Portuguese Nuno Borges (6-3, 6-2) and Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (7-6 (3), 6-1).
