Stuttgart Open: Berrettini needs three sets to reach semi-finals
Matteo Berrettini edged out Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday and will face local favourite Oscar Otte in the semi-finals
Second seed Matteo Berrettini advanced to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open by beating sixth seed Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Tennis Club Weissenhof on Friday.
The Italian had defeated qualifier Radu Albot (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) in his opening match this week in what was his first match since mid-March due to a right hand surgery.
Berrettini, ranked No 10, will play German Oscar Otte for a place in the final. Otte advanced on Friday when his opponent Benjamin Bonzi pulled out of their match and gave the German a walkover.
Berrettini reached the final of Wimbledon in 2021, going down to Novak Djokovic, but will lose his ranking points from 12 months ago due to the ATP’s decision to not allot points for this year’s event in retaliation to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players.
