Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 5 seed, moved into the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open when Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 3 seed, retired at Tennisclub Weissenhof Stuttgart on Friday.
Musetti, ranked No 30, led 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 when Bublik, ranked No 17, pulled out on Friday evening at Tennisclub Weissenhof Stuttgart.
The 22-year-old Italian will face Italian Matteo Berrettini next.
Ahead of his victory, Lorenzo Musetti defeated French qualifier Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (7-6 (9), 7-6 (9)) and German Dominik Koepfer (6-7 (9), 7-6 (5), 6-3).
The Kazakh won against Serb wildcard Hamad Medjedovic (6-1, 7-6 (4)) in the previous round of the Stuttgart tournament.
